2.3 US 2.0 Europe, BMW not happy with 1.9 engine? (archive)

The 1.9 will be replaced by newer engines in the Z series. Even the new 3 series won't get this engine (318ti). This engine is hardly 3 years on the market
Is this short? And if, what could be the reason for an early retirement?

For Europe the 2.0 engine isn't really a performance improvement. The new 320 0-100km/h, 9,9 seconds. I guess the Z3 2.0, (less heavier); 9.4 seconds?
