What I've often heard (and heard from the guys at the factory in Greenville) is that you shouldn't be trying to bust a cylinder through the engine block - but don't drive it like a granny either.
Every car that I've purchased new I've driven the engine fairly hard. By the time that I sold my last car (a honda) at 130K miles there were no problems whatsoever with the engine, and the horse power and RPM remained strong.

Of course there will be those out here who religiously follow a book written by those worried about the warranty issues....
