Audi TT thoughts (archive)

DISCLAIMER: I'm not trying to start a big thing here, nor do I claim to be an expert at any of the following matters. This is JUST MY OPINION.

I was reading the Automobile acticle on the Audi TT the other night. Seems like I've seen it talked about on the message board a few times as well. Here are my thoughts (not that I'm an expert or anything, let alone unbiased by the Bavarian marque):

1. Neat little car. I think the brushed aluminum gas cap is cool, looks like an aircraft part. I think I remember the TT runs 29 lbs of boost in the turbo and at a compression ratio of about 8.5:1.... that sounds like a lot compared to the 9-12 lbs of boosts in Saabs. I am curious if there is a lot of lag. That's one thing Saab does well to avoid.

2. I suspect there are VW Beetle parts on that car. The door handles (a meaningless part but easily recognizable) look fishy. Crappy looking wheels. So does the shape of the rear fenders. Is this thing built on the A3 chasis or the Golf/Beetle??

3. I think Audis have always had fragile designs (especially electrically and interior trim) and I will never buy one no matter what.

4. (this is important for some of you who think the TT is "better" than a Z3) No matter how good the TT is, according to the 318ti digest (and these guys are REALLY hardcore drivers and BMW fans.... much more so than even this board) Audis are not "drivers' cars" like BMWs. Follow me on this for a second. A few years ago, there was a big fiasco about the placement of the accelerator pedal on Audis. They moved it towards the center of the car to appease some sort of class action law suits. I do not claim to be a SCCA driver, nor do I have any formal driver training, but today's Audis are accused of having really poor pedal placement. They do not allow heel and toe shifting. I'm not sure this will matter to anyone here, but maybe it will make some of you feel better about your Z3.

What else? I think the TT is like I said, a neat little car. However, it's no BMW. It doesn't have the heritage, pride, personality, aftermarket part following, or 50/50 weight distribution we are all used to but sometimes take for granted. If you were to buy one or heaven for bid trade in a BMW for an Audi, you would eventually grow tired of it. Besides, have any of you seen sketches of the upcoming 2002ti/E46 318ti??
