I ordered a car and waited about 2 months for it. The timing depends on where the dealer is in his order cycle...he can only order a given number of cars per month, and mine orders once per month. Luckly, I ordered my car as the dealer was making his order, so I didn't have to wait an extra month.
I assume you are selling your car yourself, instead of trading it in. It's always difficult to time this exactly...I don't have a good solution for this.
My dealer did not require any downpayment whatsoever. I assume he planned on selling the car if I didn't take it.
As far as negotiation goes, I contacted several dealers (mostly through the internet) and determined how much over dealer invoice to offer. In my case, it was $1500. From reading other posts, this seems to be the "accepted" amount, but you should probably start lower and work your way up to that. Anyway, if your dealer won't deal, don't be afraid to look somewhere else. Good luck, and get ready for the "anticipation excitement" that all of us felt when waiting for our Z's.

: I am a Z3 owner-hopeful. I am planning on purchasing late 98/early 99. If the dealer doesn't have what you want in stock (which I understand is rare), you order what you want (~6 weeks [?]). What is the process? Is there a down payment at order with remainders due at delivery or some other payment system? I am thinking about the logistics of selling my present car, timing it with delivery. Of course, the proceeds of that sale will be put towards the Z3. Your answer will help me develop my financing plan.
: Thanks for you input.
