What is the experience of those that do this regularly. I'm not serious enough about it to get different wheels/tires or anything.

i enjoy autocrossing, but i don't do it regularly because i don't have a 2nd set of wheels with autocross tires. autocrossing eats street tires quickly. z3 tires don't have a super-long lifespan as it is, and autocrossing will shorten it. it isn't a bad thing--just build into your budget new tires more often.
