Most of the additional weight in a roadster is in extra metal to stiffen the chassis. I'm not sure about BMW, but other companies also use thicker steel, and windshield glass. The Japanese are very frugal in the amount of steel they use. All open topped cars will generally be heavier that their sedan counterpart.

: What accounts for most of the weight in a car like the Z3? What percentage is the engine, the tranny, the chasis etc? Since these bigger (than the z3) Japanese sedans like the 4-door Honda accord weigh roughly the same, I am curious as to why a smaller car shouldn't weigh significantly less.
