where I was, and with what was occuring braking
( IMHO ) would have only added to the problem, if fact I am positive but I would almost bet I never touched the brakes at all.

As a kid driving in the utah mountains I learned, that on the down hill, use the brake gently, and that downgearing was a far better answer if and when possible.
This is because brakes will tend to make you slide and over a long period of downhill the brakes can heat up causing them to fail.

I could be wrong on this, but that was what I was taught.
