Actually, the boxster only weighs about 90 lbs less than the z3 2.8 (and that might be for the base model without any options). I was thinking more along the lines of a 800-1000 lbs reduction (i.e, why that would be so difficult at the same price). Given that no such lightweight cars are sold here, it might be due to US roadworthiness requirements too. Somehow, BMW doesn't seem like a company incapable of "state of the art" design to me, given their success with the M3. Also, I thought the 6-cyl BMW engines were aluminum, not iron.
