from what we have heard on here the preproduction models (that at least one person got) were all aluminium (maybe they accidently put a Euro engine in an american bound car???...anyway the Z3 2.8 was the first BMW to use the aluminum block with cast iron sleeves (starting with 97 production, not new for the 99s)
