Rough running 1.9 - (Possible Fix) (archive)

BMW has put out another service bulletin in an attempt to smooth out some of the rough running 1.9 engines. The fix involves retarding the timing 6 degrees which requires a special tool (part number is on the bulletin)

I've heard that BMW has used this "fix" on other models in the past with only moderate success. The bulletin claims that the "fix" does not affect performance but I would like to hear Mr. Sliderule's explaination on the effects of timing and performance (since I have very little understanding on what these terms mean).

BMW has already issued a programming update that was labeled with the claim "fixes rough running 1.9 engines", but at least one owner thought if anything his Z3 got worse after the upgrade.
