Robert,

I have to believe BMW didnt expect or want you to see the details. I believe this type of thing can be done by very talented and experienced mechanics, but only after trying the process many times with varied results.

Like you, I dont want anyone bending anything on my car.

: BMW has issued a bulletin to make a small adjustment to the top if a customer complains that it is tough to close or it slams against the window frame.

: But here is the part that really spooks me. It tells the tech to take a couple wood blocks (specific size) and place them in a partially retracted top. Then the tech is to get behind the Z3 and pull on the top which (because of the wood blocks) will bend a couple of the rods.

: My power top drops against the window on occasion, and I've learned that (at least with my top) I need to latch the drivers side first. But there is no way I'm going to have someone bending parts in the top (especially in the manner they described). I've just learned how to operate my top given its particular characteristics.
