Well, I finally broke down and ordered the new wheel & tire setup today. Broke is the key word here now. Anyway, with the help of the TireRack folks, I went for the "bigger is better, as long as it fits" approach as follows:

17x8.5" Breyton Inspiration

Bridgestone Potenza S-02 Pole Position
Front: 235/40 ZR17
Rear 255/40 ZR17

Interesting measurements:
The front tires are 0.7" wider overall, have a 0.8" increase in tread width, and are 0.2" smaller in diameter than my 225/50ZR16 stock tires.
The rear tires are 1.2" wider overall, have a 1.5" increase in tread width, and are 0.2" larger in diameter than stock.

And, yes, this is as much for appearance as for performance, but I hope it will cure the "tail-happy" current behavior of the car (driver?). I plan to use the stock 16" wheels w/ BFG R1s for Autocross.

Finally, this does definitely drive a stake through the heart of any M Roadster trade-up plans you may have heard from me earlier. At least until '01 when they may get the 3.4L engine. ;-)
