Ahhh, another ///Monochrome joins the flock.
But to answer your question, "No" BMW signs over ownership to the trucking company at the factory. They have an idea when it should be there but that is only a guess. What happens is that a truck gets loaded and leaves the factory. But all the cars on that truck are not necessarly going to the same dealership (in fact they are not all Z3s either).
If your dealership is the first dealership the truck stops at then it should be on time. But if the trucks first stop he shows up at 8:00pm the truck will sit there overnight waiting for the dealership to open and take ownership of the cars.
Of course if you live on the west coast then you also have a long train ride with delays loading and unloading the train.
BMW has a process under development where owners will be able to track their vehicle via the web just like a UPS package. If I remember correctly this is a year or two away and is being timed with the special owner/factory delivery facility being built in SC (you will be able to fly to the factory, see your car roll off the assembly line, go to drivers education, then drive your vehicle home.
