What is the power difference between the pre-1998 standard amps and the HK amp? Is the HK amp rated at 200W vs. 120W for the standard amp?
I have a 1997 2.8, which came with 6 speakers and the early silver-colored amp. I have since performed the following upgrades:
1. Changed the amp to the black amp, which supposedly has better equalization settings.
Effect: The sound became much less muffled. The high frequencies became audible.
2. Added the subwoofer and rear speakers.
Effect: More bass and rear fill.
3. Changed the kickpanel speakers to Boston Acoustics RX57s. (The MB Quart QM130TX3 was out of stock and I was impatient)
Effect: Much clearer vocals.
I would rate the upgrades in order of sound improvement:
a. Replace the kick panel speakers
b. Upgrade the amp to the black amp or an HK amp(?)
c. Add the subwoofer
d. Add the rear midrange speakers
My next step is to try the HK amp. Anyone have a spare HK amp they want to sell? Also, I still need to add a CD changer.
