Strange Noise, Any info? (archive)

Bought a 98 Z3 2.8 about four weeks ago. Immediately we
noticed a strange noise when sitting in the car at idle.
Sounded like a "white noise" kind of static. Yesterday the
dealer had it all day. When I picked it up, they said they
also heard the noise but couldn't find the cause. Said they
"called" BMW and were told this is a normal noise caused by
the fuel return valve. According to the dealer, BMW said
this is a normal noise which is noticable on some cars but
not all vehicles. Also said there is no fix for it. This
sounds kind of fishy to me. Has anyone else ever heard of
this? Thanks (PS the noise is so annoying you have to turn
the radio volume up or hum very loud to not notice it.)
