It is unfortunate that you needed to post a message to inform everyone that you are offended by terms that employ the word "rice" to describe things that are of japanese (or Asian) origin. I do not think that you are being overly sensitive. Frankly, I understand your concern. It is wonderful that we all have access to a forum like the Z3 message board, but perhaps we should consider another forum. I do not know what percentage of the people that are active on this board are minorities, but I'm sure its small. If requesting consideration regarding (even) perceived racial stereotypes is too-sensitive, perhaps the discussion should be avoided altogether and we should seek out a forum where the issue will not arise.
Like you, I am a minority (I am a twenty-five year old african-american). I do not believe that anyone on this message board should suffer censorship, but I can't help believing that we ought to be considerate of a person's feelings. How anyone can claim that the term "rice" when employed to describe a japanese object is not "racially motivated" escapes me. "Rice" clearly refers to Japan (or Asia, for that matter) and its people. What is not so clear, however, is that anyone on this board has employed the term with an intent to offend asians or with a derogatory understanding of the place or people it may describe. But some of the reactions to your post have struck me as rather ill-considered. While it is wonderful that the use of the term has not been racially motivated, it is sad that people have decried the use of "p.c." terms rather than respect your opinion and feelings.
Whether it is "politically correct" to defer to another person's feelings is beyond my comprehesion. In my opinion, when an individual states that he/she finds a term offensive, it is not a broad and generalized political issue, but one personal to the people involved. No doubt, censorship is a tyranny that should never be tolerated by those that respect and understand the value of a marketplace of ideas. Nevertheless, I felt compelled to let you know that the Z3 message board is populated by open-minded people who do not base there opinions on race.
