My wife and I have a '97 328i (sport pkg of course) and a '97 Z3 1.9L.
They are 2 totally different cars, and I love them both for what they are. I will say this, if you plan any long road trips, the M3 will be much more pleasureful to drive (quiet, comfortable/more upright, etc.), and when the sun shines in, you still have the Z to hop into and drop the top.
Not to mention the fact that the M3 was designated as the best handling car over $30k by Car and Driver. If you have not read that article yet, do so. It will make you a believer in the M3. On top of that the M3 will give you the option of more cargo space if you need it, esp. with the splitfold rear seat (if they had it in '96). Also consider the fact, that once you have owned both for a while, you might be able to save up some pennies for a new M Roadster, then you will really have the best of both worlds. I will leave you with the most important input I can give...how the two cars make me feel when I get in and fire it up. When I sit in the Z3, my whole being says "Yahoo!!!!", and when I sit in the 328i, my whole body says "Ahhhhhhhh!!!" No worries either way.
That's the way it should be. For someone like me who doesn't always feel one way or the other, it's nice to have a choice. Good luck.
