Ok, I'll give you a high level overview first.
Basically you need a newsreader and access to a news server. Kind of like your web browser connects to a web server, only a newsreader only connects to one server.
The newsserver in turn subscribes to different newsgroups. Commonly a newsserver will have 20+K newsgroups on every topic immaginable, and it sure will give you some ideas on a few other topics.
You have to be given access to a newsserver, it is not like a web server that you just connect to a site like this. Usually you're ISP gives you access.
See if your ISP provided you with any newsreading software and let me know. Do you have Netscape or IE for your browser? (If you are with AOL, I'll have to check for you).
OR ALTERNATIVELY (...just thought of this...)
DejaNews - a web based interface into the newsgroups, ideal for your purposes.
