I wanted to follow the advice on the MZ3.net site to upgrade the sound system on my '99 2.3 with the base system (In-dash CD). I went to the guy that does all German installations at the local reputable stereo shop. He installed a CD-changer on my old C-class Mercedes, and really knows German car sound systems.
Anyway, he informed me that you cannot get an appreciable sound upgrade by installing new kick-panel speakers and a new amplifier. In fact, he refused to "waste my money" and install anything because he inststs that I would only get a 10%-15% increase in quality for about $300-$400. The theory is that the roadster simply does not have enough space for an appreciable upgrade.
The only thing he recommended was trying to locate an HK subwoofer that could be installed in the center console. He believes that this is the only appreciable improvement in base sound because it was designed for the roadster and works well.
I was wondering if anyone has done this, or if they have had experience in upgrading the sound quality without destroying the trunk space or cutting the hell out of the interior. I know I would lose my center storage bin with the HK sub, but am willing to sacrifice.
