Soot in the exhaust pipe is not always connected with oil consumption. Unleaded gas leaves a sooty pipe even when rather lean with no oil burning. In my motorcycle I can run leaded race gas and have a white exhaust and very lean plug readings and simply switching to unleaded gas pump or race, the pipe gets very sooty but the plugs read lean. I would not even worry about it.
