I thought that "Z" was BMW-speak for protoypes developed for purposes of: testing advanced engineering concepts; experiment w/ new production technology and materials; promote creativity; etc.
From the Z1, BMW gathered expertise re: unique drop-down doors, exterior materials, the "Z" rear axle, and, I think, some new-to-them production technique.
Recall, that the Z1 was originally an engineering exploration. Huge, unexpected demand prompted its production. By that time, the Z2 development was under way.
If I remember correctly, in appearance, the Z2 was to the Z1 kinda what the Z3 coupe is to Z3 roadster. Maybe...
: Was there ever anything called the Z2? A prototype, a drawing, an idea, anything? If not, why did they skip over it...didn't sound as good as Z3?
