BMW to move Z3 production to Great BritainSpartanburg to concentrate on X5
Under the terms of a historic agreement reached with the British government, BMW is to extensively modernize its Rover production facility at Longbridge. The Longbridge plant, sited in the heart of the British Midlands, has a capacity of 600,000 vehicles per annum.
It is expected the modernisation will be complete by early 2001 and mutifunctional production lines will be constructed allowing the plant to handle new Rover models as well as worldwide production of the BMW Z Roadster series and the Austin Healey 4000 Roadster.
Accordingly, the South Carolina Spartanburg plant will be relegated to producing X5 sports utilities for the sophisticated North American market.
