I had the same thing with my '86 Scirocco. It would only make a noise under heavy acceleration up hills. I though the trans was going. Took it to the dealer three times before they finally figured out it was a rock stuck in the headshield. I've seen your road, I'll bet it just something stuck. There's a perfect place for this stuff to accumulate just aft of where the shifter comes down. There's a depression, sort of a broad pan that looks like it would collect stuff. I dropped a part down there when installing my short shifter and had to fish it out.

Good news - if you've got the clearance you can drop the shield and reach in there and clean stuff out. Bad news - it's a pain.
