Of course, either the 2.3 or 2.8 will be a fantastic ride. But, don't choose the 2.8 because you're afraid of the 2.3's "new" engine. Engines are what BMW is best at! The one in the 2.3 (also in the 323) is a gem.

The Ford example is a bad one. Ford in particular and Explorers to a lesser degree have always had tons of mechanical problems. On the Explorer I had, the A/C, fuel pump and transmission were all replaced before the clock hit 50,000. Ford makes up for this with incredibly good customer service (at least in my case). I've not heard anywhere near the kinds of complaints about BMW mechanical problems as I have on Fords -- that includes ALL ranges of Bimmers. Fit and finish -- sometimes. Mechanical -- no.

As for value retention, just peruse the used market. 2.8s plummeted at the introduction of the 2.3. They're simply too close in performance and too distant in price. I'd go for the 2.8 ONLY if I were truly passionate about this car, i.e. I love this engine. The extra chrome pieces on the grill and such are a turn-on, the wheel choices are cooler, etc. Otherwise, the money saved on a 2.3 is a wiser move.
