: Most of you are aware that I recently sold my 97 1.9 so that I could order a 2000 MY 2.3. Now that the invoice pricing has been released I find myself reconsidering my position. If you review the pricing you will see…
: …that the difference of $2,860 in the total dealer invoice prices should end up being the total difference in selling price assuming the dealer isn't trying to move one model or the other due to some kind of inventory imbalance. Thus it gets down to the question of whether or not the 2.8 model is worth $2,860 more than the 2.3 model. Last year when the difference was $3,215 I would have purchased the 2.3. Now I am not so sure. What would you do?
Other manufacturers charge between $400-900 for 23hp upgrades--and most of those involve an upgraded engine. The 2.8 is simply a stroked 2.5--and cost BMW maybe $20 more to manufacture. The only reason anyone buys a 2.8 is an unshakable belief that you get what you pay for--all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.
