If loss of trunk space is a concern, you can always mount the amp to the front wall of the trunk. I think Steve mounted his there...
I would avoid a small amp (physical size) because in order to make it small, the manufacturer had to skimp on something (power, heat sinks, etc). Besides. there isn't much room where the factory P.O.S. amp is anyway.
I'd mount the amp on the front wall of the trunk...it really won't take up much room anyway.
