The price difference for comparably equipped cars isn't very drastic, so unless you're wanting to de-content the car, why not go with the 2.8?
The 1.9 at least had the advantage that it was lighter than the 2.8. According to BMW, the 2.3 is only about 10 pounds lighter than the 2.8. (I assume that it uses the same cylinder block, but with narrower bores?)
I wonder if you might get a better deal on the 2.8, too? Given that so many people see little difference in performance, I have the impression dealers are more willing to deal on the 2.8. (I might be wrong).
