...it's just that the Santa Cruz mountains aren't, ahem, geologically very stable. Of my drive last sunday, only that stretch of Hwy 35 didn't have some sort of construction/slip-out section. Driving down to Big Sur, I didn't mind the 2 stoplights they've got for the earthquake retrofit (although the Bixby Creek Bridge doesn't look so picturesque these days :-).

Skyline is still gorgeous, but there's not too much sun on your original route. There's all these darn tall trees blocking the sunlight - Red-somethings... Hwy 84 is fun, starting in the trees, twisting down the mountain, ending up at the ocean. But the road is REAL rough is places.

Anyone know about the status of the road up Mount Hamilton to the observatory? I think it's Hwy 130. DOT says it's clear and you get a beautiful few up the valley. However, the last time I drove it there was more traffic than I'd care for.

Cheers,

: Only rules
: some fun turns, no construction, lots-o-sun

: : Around Bear Creek Rd. on both Hwy 9 and 35, there's construction according to www.doc.ca.gov. ETAK's had construction advisories on Bear Creek Rd. itself. But then it might be nothing worth worrying about - haven't seen it first hand.
