In Reply to: Re: Should I change my order to an '00 2.8? posted by tim on April 02, 1999 at 12:23:15:

: Fred - if you are not at your breaking point - and 2800 bucks is not a biggie - why not get the 2.8?? I find it very difficult to believe a 2.3 will hold its value better than a 2.8. If it is not too big of a pain in the butt to change your order -I would do it. Question: Does BMW put a 2.5 litre engine (i.e. this engine) in any other auto? You know the 2.8 has been around a bit - tested - hopefully all the bugs out - what about the 2.5? I had a leased (thank god) 97 explorer with the 'new' dohc 6 cylinder engine that delivered 205 hp - no need for the 8 cylinder right? Well - just so happens the oil pump failed in those dohc 6 cylinder engines - I had my entire engine replaced (for free) after literally a 3 second flash of a check engine light on the freeway. Get the 2.8 Fred - not for the speed - but for the fact that it is not 'new'. tim.
: : Most of you are aware that I recently sold my 97 1.9 so that I could order a 2000 MY 2.3. Now that the invoice pricing has been released I find myself reconsidering my position. If you review the pricing you will see…

: : …that the difference of $2,860 in the total dealer invoice prices should end up being the total difference in selling price assuming the dealer isn't trying to move one model or the other due to some kind of inventory imbalance. Thus it gets down to the question of whether or not the 2.8 model is worth $2,860 more than the 2.3 model. Last year when the difference was $3,215 I would have purchased the 2.3. Now I am not so sure. What would you do?
