I did it and I didn't remove the ring first. I was very careful and taped off the surrounding area and then went to work with the red Sharpie. The resulting color is identical to the other lights on the dash -- cool organge glow. Try it . . . if you don't like it, you can pay to have your whole dash taken apart to remove the ring and have the correct OEM part number installed (not worth the dough and hassle). Also, while they are removing your dash to install the little organge ring . . . use that time to polish the inside of your mufflers.
