The primary purpose of octane is to reduce combustibility and thereby reduce knocking and pinging. Higher octane does not effect performance otherwise. Actually, if higher octane did have an effect, this effect would be to reduce performance rather than increase it.

I've heard that its OK to use the lowest octane rating that doesn't cause pinging in your car. I don't know if this is really ok or if there would be long term consequences. It would be a great "CarTalk" question.
