Of course, it depends on how & where you drive. I live downtown, near my office, so I don't have to deal with stop & go commutes, and it's easy for me to pontificate about the virtues of manual transmissions. I can understand how a manual would be a nuisance in such circumstances -- especially if you need to talk on the phone.

Though there will always be a place for conventional manuals, some of these new computer-controlled manuals seem very promising. Pretty hard to argue with a transmission offering all the precise control of a manual (plus precise automatic rev-matching in manual mode) AND fully automatic capability. Seems like Ferrari's got the best version right now, but continued development by BMW should (I hope) get them in the hunt!
