Z-Day plus one. Rainin’ all morning but sun broke through the clouds this afternoon. I decided to lower the top of my less than 100 miles old Z3 2.8 and took my nearly four year old daughter out for a ride. And for the first time I saw what all the people on this board are telling about the legendary Z3 smile. It was on my daughters face all the time, she enjoyed the ride as much as I did.

We passed by my office, which is located in a neighborhood with lots of immigrants. Two things crossed my mind when we passed some kids playing on the streets, kids of the same age as my lucky passenger. First I knew that my daughter didn’t realize how fortunate she was sitting in a $40,000 car and taking things for granted. Secondly I also realized the potential danger my new Z3 would face when from Monday on it will be parked in this neighborhood, with all those kids playing football, basketball etc in the streets.

Beyond the legendary smile that becomes a natural state for the Z3 driver, I want to share some impressions.

- The overall build quality of the MY2K Z3 is excellent. I like the new rear and I agree with everybody who said this car now needs 17” rims.
- Putting the boot cover is a nightmare and it is a shame at carries the label “engineered in Germany”.
- The sound of the Kenwood system is adequate with the top up but with the top down I miss the speed sensitive volume control. Anybody has a Kenwood KRC777 in his Z3 and knows how to resolve this. However the sound of the 2.8 exhaust is superb at any speed.
- Although I never drove a Z3 without the new lined roof I think this one should make the hardtop obsolete.
- I do not know how the M-technik suspension is different from the normal one, if it’s lowered or not. The front spoiler clearance is 17.5 cm (7”). Is this lower than on normal Z3s ?
- As I picked up my car yesterday there was a guy explaining me all the do and do-nots of the Z3. Well, as a matter of fact I explained HIM everything about the Z3. I already know far more about this car than I ever knew about a car I drove. Thank you all on this message board.
- I know that in the pre-MY2K cars BMW used a lot of cheap plastic in the interior. I cannot compare my Z3 with the old model and I cannot judge the improvements but I know the materials used in my 525tds, which is in the same price range as my Z3, are from far better quality than in my roadster. There is a huge difference when you compare things like the glovebox, the panels around the doors, the small storage compartments in the back etc. Also if you put the Z3 alongside the 525tds with the trunks open. The 525tds trunks says “build in Germany and proud of” while the Z3 trunk says “please close me, but don’t slam to hard”.
- My car was 4 weeks in Germany for QC and they replaced the airbags due to a 3 series recall. I now have a VERY BIG rattle in the passengers’ airbag compartment. It’s there all the time no matter what road or at what speed I drive. I can even hear it when I close the drivers’ side door. So back to the dealer, but I am disappointed the BMW guys who did the QC (?) in Germany didn’t solve this problem before delivery.
- I always thought the BMW alarm combined with the remote keyless entry did not have an interior motion sensor. Well it has one in my car. Is this new?

I must apologize for those of you who asked me for pictures especially of the Radial Style rims. I do not have a digital camera, but I will take some pictures and when the film is developed I will scan them and post them here.

Now the sun is out again and me en Z too !!!
