I know you don't need to read this, but let this father of two teen age drivers share a few thoughts with you:
1. You have picked a great car. I know you may not understand this now but the car can go much faster and do things that you are not ready for yet. Things can happen very fast at speed. My oldest son has wrecked one of my cars (minor) and one of his (major)in four years. He is now twenty. I also thought I was a great driver until I got my ///M Roadster. The limits on the car are far beyond both of us. So, until you have matured a little as a driver, please take it easy. The life you save may be your own.
2. Please join the BMW club. Cost is only $35.00 per year. Take their driver safty school. This costs about $50.00. They will teach you things about your car that you did not think possable. It is also alot of fun. You will come away with a greater understanding of the great car you are driving. It will make you a better driver. Consider this a part of your maturing as a driver.
3. Take your car to an autocross. This will allow you to drive your car at the limit without the danger of doing it on the public streets. The streets are not a safe place to race. Half the drivers in my city DO NOT have liablity insurance. One in eight drivers on Friday night are driving drunk. The public streets have oil, sand and pot holes that can total a car and kill you if hit wrong. The streets also have the law and if your like my oldest son, you will be buying expensive high risk insurance and worried about losing your drivers license.
4. One mistake can really cost you. As an attorney I have seen a single accident cause damages in the millions. A major burn injury or spinal injury will ruin a life and cost millions in medical bills, lost earnings and pain and suffering. After you file bankruptcy you still have to live with yourself afterwords. You can also face criminal charges, including manslaughter. If convicted you will be older then I am before you get to breath fresh air, enjoy the touch of a woman and drive again.
So, enjoy the car but learn to drive it before you push it. Don't let some jerk push you into doing something stupid. Just drive on by the stupid jerk, with that ear to ear grin only your roadster can give.
Lester, father of two young drivers.
