Nice to hear from a fellow young enthusiast! Unfortunately, I'm going to have to be the bearer of bad news. Of course, the BMWCCA is a wonderful club and has lots to offer to all of it's members regardless of their ages or what they drive and driver's school is the very best of them all. Here's the problem: 1. You must be at least 18 years old to participate in any club sponsored driving
events. 2. Convertibles are not allowed to participate in any driving events except for fun rallys) because while the risk of rolling the car is small, it does happen, and in a convertible you would be at the very least badly hurt.
There is a long article debating the pros and cons of this issue in the Roundel
and our chapter feels very strongly against allowing it, so they will probably
never be allowed. However, you don't need to have a BMW to participate in
driver's schools, people bring all sorts of things that are sporty as long as
they are in good working order (and being stick shift helps too--you don't learn
anything about driving in an automatic.) I really don't want to discourage you,
so if you were having second thoughts about the car, maybe an M3 would be better
suited for the way you want to use the car.
If you have any other questions about either our chapter or our events, please
feel free to send them to me any time! I hope I've answered your questions (and
that I haven't ruined your day :-)
