Traction control was not available on the '98 and is standard on the '99 M roadster. I think it is a big feature, and I live in California with no snow (except in mountains), and rarely rain. AST just keeps you under control, especially while you get used to the awesome power this car has. It probably improves tire life too, since you don't squeak the tires as much. And you can easily disable it for when you want some spirited driving to get that last few % out of the car, or for jumping off the line with spinning tires if that is your thing.
