Somewhere I do have one of those 3 finger grabbers, but I wasn't at home.

Actually, the best advice came from JonM, who specifically indicated that if you apply tape to the nut and where it attaches to beforehand, it'd be easier to handle. I lost it when I was pulling out the wrench.

Just tape it down before trying to remove it.
