If you've survived in the Miata, you'll find the Z3 to be a pussycat in the snow. I used to have a Miata (loved it) and now have a 2.8.
The 17" wheels & performance tires don't give you much traction, but the Z3 is basically a much more stable machine than the Miata. (This isn't entirely a compliment, as the flip side of the Z3's stability is that it definitely lacks most of the Miata's nimbleness, but doesn't everything?) With traction control, the Z3 is even easier to deal with in the snow. Of course, you don't have much traction unless you fit snow tires, but the car copes very well with what little traction its high performance tires give it.
I made it through our snowy winter this past season just fine without snow tires, and I suspect you'd do the same. Go for it!
