Bartman - Mercedes lists both the 5 speed auto, and the 5 speed stick with the same times in all their paperwork. The auto has a slight advantage off the line because you can torque it up prior to a green light, also you can't miss a shift.
Because there was no real advantage to the stick shift M-B could not understand why the U.S. demanded it.
The real question might be: How can a stick shift be a full half second slower without somebody screwing up a shift?
