all the vehicles mentioned use a similar trailing arm suspension, but they have slight differences in geometry.

Having previusly autox-raced an E36 M3, but now a 2.8 Z3 coupe, I prefer the Z3 setup. All the talk about it being inferior for racing applications is BS as far as I'm concerned. Proper shock valving is highly critical; the OEM shocks just don't cut it, even when new.
