I got my blanket with the car. I don't know if it still comes with the car or not, you should ask you dealer. The blanket helps prevent scratches to your rear window. I use it most of the time, and my window looks like new (it's 2 years old). Get some Meguiars #18 for general cleaning of the window, and #17 for more rigirous cleaning. You'll probably have to go to their web site to get it. BMW makes a top cleaner/conditioner kit. I bought one and have used it with good results, but it's pricey. Several on this board recommend Star brite , which is a boat canvas conditioner and is available at marine stores.
Another tip I learned from a BMW associate: When raising the top, push up on the front edge just after you unlatch it. This puts a natural bend in the window. Place your had in the bend and continue to fold the top back. This maintains a "large curve" in the window and prevents creases. Others on this board recommend a tubular pillow, or pool noodle, for this purpose, but with this technique, I've found it unnecessary.
: I'm new to the BMW soft top world, so I have some simple questions:
: 1) Does the rear window blanket come with the car or is it an add-on option (I didn't get one with the car) ?
: 2) Is the rear window blanket necessary, does it really help maintain the window and/or does it do anything else?
: 3) Should I be putting anything on the soft top (perservative, waterproofing, etc.)?
: 4) Any additional maintenance items that a hard top person (like me) wouldn't know about?
