I have been buyingcars for many years and never felt that the extended warr. was a good for me, alway s felt that I could afford to assume my own risk. I 1996 I bought a (new)Ford Van at B.S. Ford. The finance 'pitchman'said that they had a new ex. warr. that would guar. that my full purchase price, $785.00, would be returned if I did not claim against the plan. The dealer 'pitchman' emphasized that it would be in my best interest if 'I would only use the warr. for major repairs and that would prevent me losing my $785.00. The warr. term was 60 mos or 70,000 mi.
Due to a change in needs I traded the in the van in Nov. 1999 and went back to the dealer (B.S. Ford) and requested the return of my $785. Six weeks later I was informed that even though I did not claim against the warranty they would not refund my money since, by the small print I did not keep the van for the FULL term of the warranty, five years.
I wish in 1996 I would have known what the next 5 years had in store for me! As I explained to the B.S. Ford sales mgr. does he know where he will be in five years? Why the hell would I buy into a deal that I could only collect on if I kept the vehicle for 5 years...I asked, "what if I drove out of the dealership on the day I bought the vehicle and 'totaled' it?", the dealer reply,"too bad, if you didnt keep the van for five years you get nothing". Correctamundo, the fine print says that I can only claim my money within 45 days of the end of the warr. term, 60 mos. the dealer said, "in your ear". I realize that this is a long post w/o BMW 'stuff' but I need input from the "board". Jim, recently screwed by Bayshore Ford., to verify contact Mike Joseph, Mgr. B.S. Ford
