Just my $0.02
I acquired a 00 2.3 a few months ago.
Before purchasing the car, I drove a M Roadster, S2000, and Porsche Boxster(2.5).
I thought the porsche was the best balanced of the bunch, but for ~$50,000 it was overpriced.
The M Roadster had great useable power. Passing was effortless, but handling was less that stellar. I remember on a particular curved-banked freeway entrance, the expansion joint would upset the back end. I also heard a couple of creaks from the body.
your desc of the S2000 is pretty close to my experience. Steering was direct, the drivetrain felt tightly connected, love the SHIFTER!. The suspension was stiff, but refined. However, couple of things annoyed me to no end... the heel of my shoes would get caught in the horizontal reinforcements at the bottom of the floor everytime I entered/exited the car... However, it was seriously overpriced for the dealer asking price of $38,000! I think you'd be better off buying a used 3rd Gen RX-7, get more perf and save $15,000.
So Basically the 2.3 makes the most sense, and value... I use it as a daily driver, and I can have fun while obeying the speed limit ^_^.
Unfortunately, the Porsche salesman recently invited me back for a test drive of the Boxster S... hmm... I could probably sell my Z3 for at least 30K... cough up another $35K...
Seriously, it's a great car! but it's definitely a different flavor... anyay the point is there will always be faster and better cars... Each wil have their own merits.
I'm rambling now so.
