I couldn't agree with you more about BMW losing ground. If they REALLY wanted to create a true drivers car at an affordable price the COMPACT was the model they could have used.
If the base compact (318ti) sold for $20,000 they could have created an M-compact for around $32000 dollars. Leave off the power windows, doors and make the back seat optional/removable. With the old semi-trailing rear end it takes MORE skill to drive this car fast than an E36 M3.
A basic no frills 3.2litre M-compact would have BLOWN the doors off of the e36 M3 and probably the M-raodster and MAYBE even the M-coupe for around eight to ten grand less than any of the other M's out there.
But I guess it would have stolen sales from the other M's and BMW is in to make money first, and provide a true driving machine second.
