Most of the posts on this message board that I have read regarding the comparison of Z3 and S2000 were based on numbers they read off of magazines and similar sources. The numbers may show that S2000 performs better than Z3, but there are other criteria that affects the purchasing decisions of the general public. Granted that a lot of people based their buying decisions based on brands, and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out why. There are a lot of compromised made by companies in order to sell more of their products, it's all part of capitalism. If BMW was to cater to the demographic of high performance enthusiasts, they would miss out on profits from the rest of the population. Besides, there are other car makers that makes only high performance cars, and most of them have been bought and sold by larger car manufacturers.
Back to my original point(finally). When I was shopping for a convertible, I've considered most of the roadster that are already on the market, and some that were going to be on the market soon, namely the S2000 and that new Toyota which was suppose to replace the MR2. I considered the Boxster, but I thought the price was too high, even though I could afford it. Plus, for some reason, the Porsche dealer I went to had all their brand new Boxsters sold as used. I considered the Miata, but there are way too many of them on the streets already. I wanted a fun car, yet I also wanted something that'll have characters different than a Miata. If S2000 were on the market at that time, I probably would have like the handling, but quite honestly, the style just don't grab me. Then again, I thought the Z3 were ugly when they first came out. Anyway, my decision on getting the Z3 was because it didn't make a big dent in my wallet, and it wasn't a Miata(no offense to Miata owners, Miatas are nice cars, too).
It's a free world(at least in the U.S.), we can buy whatever we want, have an opinion on anything, and speak freely, even if others disagree. The bottom line is have fun and enjoy the things you have. If you look at the rest of the world, most of them are not as blessed as we. Life is too short to bicker about something as inane as whose car is faster.
