IMHO a Miata should be bought as pretty much a stripper if you're going to buy one at all. It has everything it needs to do what a Miata does best with a very short sticker and a street price that actually can be close to $20K if you drive a bargain like a sports car begs to be ;-)

And FWIW some years down the road when you sell it, that $27K Miata and a $20K Miata will be worth about the same to shoestring sports car enthusiasts who shop for used ones. Condition will count more than anything. So buying one without stuff that's "expected" on a Z3 (like leather seats) will actually result in better resale (relative to what you originally shelled out) rather than hurting it.

Bottom line: Buy a Miata if you want a bargain price on a very nimble barebones sports car. If you're willing to pay close to Z3 prices, then make sure that's what you end up with even if it's a slightly used one.
