: Took my daughter to her hockey game today, and was approached by one of the fathers of another player, who asked if I was the guy who owned the "little red BMW sportscar".

: Saying that I was, he told me that he was a Troy, MI fireman who was called to the scene of a head on collision on I-75 at 1:30 am.

: An 80 year old man was driving the wrong way on I-75 and hit a Z3 head on, as it came around a curve. He told me the old man, in the other car, was killed instantly.

: His point in telling me the story is as follows:

: The guy in the Z3 was still alive, at the scene, but they were not able to cut him out with "jaws of life". They could not cut through the windshield brace, as is was, as he said, "a solid piece of steel". The engine was pushed under the body of the car, and the only way to get him out was to completely break-out the windshield glass and drag him out. He said he was concerned about breaking both legs due to the position that the driver ended up in the Z3.

: He told me he was completely amazed by the impact of the vehicles, and that he could not find any massive wounds on the driver until he layed him down on the pavement and noticed, as he said, "a dent in the left side of his head, where he had struck the top corner of the windshield frame". Unfortunately the story does not have a good ending as the Z3 driver died aprox. 3 minutes later. The Z3 driver was NOT WEARING HIS SEAT BELT!!!

: The fireman said could not believe how well the Z3 withstood the impact of such a collision. He told me "if the guy had been wearing his seat belt, he probably would have made it".

: Sorry for the downer, but there is a lesson here for all of us. BMW have given us a great Roadster, that is also built with our safety in mind. We must do our part also, and that is to "buckle-up" ALWAYS!!
