Last week I posted about my blowout on the 680/24 interchange in Walnut Creek.
Went to East Bay BMW and then to their local tire dealer on their recommendation. Tire guy looked over the tire and found no road hazard damage in the tread -- he couldn't tell much about potential road hazard damage to the sidewall:
We got on the phone to Michelin and the tire dealer described the damage and said there was no tread damage and very little wear. Then he put me on the phone with the Michelin rep who told me that the damage must have come from having the tire run flat. I was about to get really P-Oed at getting stuck with a $200 replacement bill for a tire with 6000 miles on it, but the rep said they would give me a "goodwill tread credit" of half the cost of the tire. Tire dealer told me that was about as good as I was going to get, so I filled out a few forms and he handed over $85. He said what probably happened was that I hit something a few miles before the blowout that caused a leak in the sidewall. Since the road-rim distance is so small, it's hard to tell that you're running flat until about the time the tire goes "plooey!"
Did anyone ever come up with an affordable tire pressure sensor set-up for the Z3? Seems that even ~ $300 or so would be worth it if you saved even one or two tires over your time of ownership.
The $85 wasn't as good as a total refund, but better than nothing.
