Since he bought his S2000 in November, presumably, he didn't pay anywhere near MSRP.

Cute story. Further evidence of what we've always known - people seem to prefer their own cars. Surprise!

The "Yeah I can beat the piss out of the Z3" line is funny too. I've gotten similar comments from fellow (2.3) Z3'ers against my 1.9. No kidding. I'll be at a BevMo or a Chevron station; and, pursuant to striking up a conversation to get them interested in this message board, I've heard:
"I'd never buy an 1.9!";
"You really need it [6-cyl]";
& some basic snickering.

Nah, BMW owners aren't snobs. Oh no! OTOH, we ran into a very nice couple with an MY'00 2.3. Apparently, momentarily, confused by the rear end styling, motioned to ours & said something like: "Well, ours isn't an ///M roadster." Yes, I told them the truth! ;-)

Nonetheless, I haven't noticed any of them here...I'd wish they'd participate.

I parked next to a silver S2000 last night at the grocery store. I have to admit that it is a sharp looking car IMO. There is a red one that parks in my pkg lot at work, and I can't tell which color I like better. The red one looks funny with the top up, but the silver is more subdued. Anyways, when I came out, the guy was getting in his car, and I said nice car . He rolled down the window and said "Thanks". I asked him what he thought of it, and he said "Oh I love it." Then I said "How long have you had it?", trying to see if it was past the break in period. He said, "Actually since November." I said, "So you've had it up into the 'fun zone'?". He said, "Oh yeah, I've been 92 mph in 3rd gear." (Digital speedo I guess).

: So far so good, then ever so subtley it went down hill.

: I said, "That's got 6 gears right?", trying to assess just how high 92mph is for 3rd gear.
: He said, "Yup, 6 gears, 4 cyl., 240 horses.", rattling off the specs. No big deal, I guess.

: Then he asks me about my M3. "Yours is pretty nice too (despite it being filthy with road salt), that's an M3 right? (he didn't see the badge but was guessing I think)"
: "yup"
: "How long have you had it"
: "Yadda Yadda Yadda"

: Then I say "Yeah we used to have a Z3 1.9L, before we got the M3", trying to say, 'I used to have a roadster, I like roadsters.'

: Now he knows I'm obviously a BMW fan, and despite that he follows with "Yeah I can beat the piss out of the Z3."

: Whoaaaaa! Hit the brakes buddy. He obviously suffers from the ever popular syndrome of "All Z3's are slow 4 bangers" Like some Mroadster owner who posted here a couple of weeks ago, who said a friend of theirs came up to them and said they had seen their car in the paper for $22k. THEY ARE NOT ALL THE SAME PEOPLE.

: The rest of the conversation is academic, and consisted mostly of me trying to get into my car while he talked my ear off for the next minute or two. I threw in one last comment about how much I loved the Inline 6 cyl in my M3, and I was on my way. He was a nice fellow, and it wasn't a bad conversation, but he had to go and bash the Z3, and even bashed the boxster, saying that the S2000 was just soooooo much more fun than both the Z3 and the Boxster. He also added that he didn't fit in the Z3 (He wasn't overly fat, about 6' tall maybe 230lbs). Probably made his decision easier I guess.

: Anyways, I was excited to have a good conversation with another sports car fan, but then he had to taint it. I didn't realize til afterwards how irritated it made me. I guess it was more disappointment than anything.

: My opinion about the S2000 hasn't changed, I still like it, and I bet it would be fun to drive, but I thought some of you roadster fans would be interested to hear an S2000 story.
