I know what you mean about "looking young." I'm 28 but get carded routinely, especially when I'm not in my office clothes.
Back in June & July when we were shopping for what eventually became our Z3, my wife and I went to 4 different BMW dealers in the Bay Area and were greeted courteously at every one. All but one offered a test drive without a salesperson along for the ride. One got us to try out an M since they didn't have any manual tranny 2.3s or 2.8s. Never once did we feel like we were being given "the look" even though we both showed up in shorts, T-shirts, Tevas, and baseball caps.
Contrast that with our most recent visit to our local Honda dealer back in October. I had dropped the Accord off for a warranty clutch cylinder replacement, but the dealer had called home to say it wouldn't be done as promised after I had already left work. My wife drove down to meet me so I wouldn't be stranded. She ended up waiting for me for about a half hour because of traffic, so she wandered over to the showroom to peek at the S2000. She was dressed professionally, but the salesdroid didn't want her to even touch the car which was behind velvet ropes. She said he looked at her liie something you'd scrape off your show when she asked whether test drives were available. Sticker was MSRP + $10k. Fuggitabowdit.
Wish I could have seen the guy's look when she left and hopped into her topaz/beige 2.3 and drove off.
